The Name

The Carvetii people were here first.

They left no monuments. They left workmanship.

Two thousand years ago, the land between the Solway and the fells belonged to the Carvetii tribe. Their heartland ran through the Eden Valley. Their capital stood at Luguvalium, the place we now call Carlisle.

They were makers. From the wood and metal of this landscape they shaped tools and ornament, work that was inventive, practical and quietly beautiful, and that went on influencing craft long after the tribe itself had faded from record.

That is why this house carries their name. Four businesses, each shaped by the same hills, each believing that a thing worth making is worth making properly. We share the Carvetii's home, their patience and their trade.

The Partnership

A home is not experienced in parts

You do not walk into a room and see furniture, then flooring, then lighting, then fire. You feel a room whole or not at all.

House of Carvetii began with that simple observation. Four independent, family run businesses, each with its own workshop, its own history and its own standards, choosing to work under one roof so that every element of a home could be considered together, from the first sketch.

This is not a merger. Each business remains independent and that independence is precisely what makes the partnership work. What we share is a postcode, a philosophy, and clients that have the whole conversation managed in one place.

The Houses Within The House
Since 1996

Carvetii Town & Country Interiors

Founded by Roy Sweetman in 1996 as Town & Country Interiors, the studio grew from a Carlisle showroom into one of the North's finest makers of bespoke kitchens, bathrooms and fitted furniture. Every piece is made by hand in the Kendal workshop, from FSC-certified timber, by craftspeople who heat that workshop with their own offcuts.

When the business took the name of the old tribe, it was less a rebrand than an acknowledgement — this is what the work had been about all along.

  • 1996 Roy Sweetman establishes Town & Country Interiors in Carlisle
  • Over the years Membership of the Guild of Master Craftsmen; partnerships with Poggenpohl, Gaggenau and Armani/Casa
  • The Kendal workshop Furniture-making is brought in-house under Tony Wright, with a skilled team crafting each piece from responsibly sourced timber
  • The Carvetii name The business takes the name of the Iron Age craftsmen who once worked this same land
  • 2025 Founding partner in the house at Gatebeck, with the workshop right next door

Designed & Made a few miles from where it will live

Every Carvetii kitchen, bathroom and piece of fitted furniture is made by hand in the Kendal workshop, from responsibly sourced timber, by people who have spent their working lives at the bench. Nearly thirty years on, the measure of the work hasn't changed: build it properly, and it will still be doing its job when the trends have moved on.

Since 1998

Majik House

Tim and Carol Burrow founded Majik House in 1998, making it one of the longest-established smart home specialists in the country. From its base near Kendal, the team designs cinema rooms, lighting, audio and intelligent control systems that work quietly in the background — technology that feels like part of the house rather than an addition to it.

CEDIA-certified, nationally awarded, and still guided by the family that founded it.

  • 1998 Founded by Tim and Carol Burrow as specialists in cinema rooms, lighting design, audio and smart home systems
  • Over the years Growth from Cumbria across the North West, with offices near Kendal, in Carlisle and in Manchester; CEDIA certification sets the standard
  • 2023 Twenty-fifth anniversary; a single Lytham project wins Best Whole Home Integration at the Smart Building Awards and Best Use of Home Technology at the British Home Awards, with two CEDIA EMEA shortlistings
  • 2024 CEDIA Smart Home Awards finalist for the second consecutive year
  • 2025 Founding partner in House of Carvetii

The best technology is the kind you stop noticing

A cinema room that disappears until the lights dim. Lighting that follows the evening. Sound that belongs to the room, not to a box in the corner. Majik House has spent more than twenty-five years designing systems in from the first sketch, so the technology serves the home, never the other way round.

Since 1990

KQC Flooring

KQC began as a family furniture business in Morecambe, started by brothers Paul and Karl Greenall. Thirty-five years on, it is recognised as one of the UK's leading flooring specialists — luxurious carpets, bespoke rugs, stair runners and hand-cut wood floors — still family-run, now guided by the next generation of Greenalls.

Every project is fitted by KQC's own employed craftsmen, more than twenty of them, because the last metre of a floor matters as much as the first.

  • 1990 Founded in Morecambe by brothers Paul and Karl Greenall as a family-run furniture business
  • 1991–92 A second, then a third retail unit opens in Morecambe
  • 1994 The business comes north to Kendal, taking Unit 7 on Dockray Hall Industrial Estate
  • 1996 The move into carpets and flooring begins — learned from the ground up
  • 2000 A larger unit is acquired at Dockray Hall and a new showroom built; KQC's home to this day
  • 2006 Recognised as the largest flooring contractor within fifty miles
  • 2023 A second showroom opens at 109 King Street, Knutsford, carrying KQC into Cheshire
  • 2025 Founding partner in the house at Gatebeck

The last metre matters as much as the first

Thirty five years of carpets, bespoke rugs, stair runners and hand-cut wood floors, every one fitted by KQC's own craftsmen, never subcontracted. A floor is the one surface of a home you touch every day. It should be chosen slowly and fitted perfectly.

Croft & Flame

Croft & Flame is the newest name in the house, and the oldest idea in it. A croft is a dwelling — stone-built, carefully tended, warm against the moor. Paired with flame, it describes what a fireplace has always been: the point a home gathers around.

Founded in 2026, Croft & Flame designs and installs fireplaces and media walls, handcrafted in Britain and built to outlast the trends around them. The name is new; the hands are not. Behind it stand sixteen years spent designing, supplying and installing fireplaces — learning how a flue draws, how stone weathers, how a room settles around a fire.

We bring the craft itself — fire, the element the other three houses make room for — and the same conviction our partners started with: do the work properly, look after people sincerely, and the years will take care of themselves.

Focus & warmth, beautifully placed.

  • 2010 The experience begins — sixteen years of designing, supplying and installing fireplaces precede the name
  • 2026 Croft & Flame is established: fireplaces and media walls, handcrafted in Britain, designed to last
  • 2026 Joins House of Carvetii as its fourth partner, completing the house — furniture, technology, flooring and fire

Every home deserves a fire worth coming home to

Croft & Flame designs and installs fireplaces and media walls, handcrafted in Britain and designed to last. The fire should be the last thing you see before you close your eyes — we design with that moment in mind. Focus & warmth, beautifully placed.

The House at Gatebeck

Come and stand in it.

House of Carvetii sits at Gatebeck, near Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District with the Carvetii furniture workshop right next door. It opened its doors in 2025, and it is more than a showroom. Here you can run a hand along a cabinet made a few metres away, feel a hand-cut wood floor underfoot, sit in a cinema room designed around a family evening, and watch a fire settle in a surround built to outlive the house it warms. The people who made each of them will be in the building. One visit. Four crafts. Every element of your home, considered together.
